DESIGN CUES
Yggdrasil - the world tree
Yggdrasil serves as a sacred center of Norse cosmology, around which the entire universe exists. Similar to a tree of life or tree of knowledge found in other cultural writings.
The branches extend into the heavens and its roots descend far below. As a result Yggdrasil connects the nine worlds of Norse mythology.
The symbolism of Yggdrasil as a through-line for all aspects of Norse mythology suggests that its inclusion into the timepiece should be similarly central.
Yggdrasil has therefore been incorporated in the center of the dial as a skeletonised cut-through - connecting the dial above to the movement beneath.
Fenrir - swallowing the sun
Fenrir (or depending on the version of ancient Norse writing - Fenrir’s son Sköll) is a giant wolf, most famous in mythology for swallowing the sun and moon - upending the functioning of the world and leading to Ragnarök.
This provides some interesting symbolism referenced in the timepiece.
Within every mechanical watch there is also a similar central circular element which ensures smooth functioning - the balance wheel.
The balance wheel is a key moving component within a timepiece that regulates time. Made from brass this circular wheel ‘beats’ 21,600 times per hour while a watch is in operation. It is also the most mechanically beautiful element to observe within a watch.
To connect these two elements the timepiece incorporates a custom made back plate over the movement, visible through the back of the watch - showing Fenrir grasping the balance wheel in his jaws.

Jörmungandr - world serpent
Within Norse mythology Jörmungandr is a giant serpent which inhabits the sea surrounding the world. It eventually grows so large that it grabs its own tail, closing the loop.
Known for being the mortal enemy of Thor, Jörmungandr embodies an ever-present and growing threat in Norse mythology, building up to his eventual role in Ragnarök.
The reference to Jörmungandr is included via a scaled leather band fitted to the timepiece. The band encircles the wearer’s wrist, similar to the world serpent encircling the mythic norse world.
Mjölnir - Thor’s hammer
The crown of the timepiece includes a small intricate engraving of a traditional viking symbol for Mjölnir - Thor’s hammer.
The use of this symbol on the watch holds particular relevance - as within norse mythology Thor used Mjönir to kill Jörmungandr during the battle of Ragnarök.
Runes
The lettering style of the viking age provides a unique visual cue incorporated into the dial of the timepiece.
This lettering is laser etched with a rusted edge - used in place of 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 & 11 on the dial.
Arrow head hands and index markers
In keeping with the overall theme of the watch - key dial elements such as the hands and index markers have been designed around a sharp, arrow-like asthetic.

Runes commonly used to refer to numbers 1-24 in the ‘Elder Futhark’ viking language
